Parkinson’s Disease: Latest Developments

What’s new in Parkinson’s treatment today?

In recent years, we have seen an increasing use of invasive techniques for administering pharmaceuticals through continuous drug delivery pumps (apomorphine pump, Duodopa pump and ProDuodopa pump). These pumps help stabilize drug levels and therefore reduce motor fluctuations, improving patients’ daily lives.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has also approved the marketing of innovative inhaled levodopa preparations, administered through special devices, for the immediate relief of sudden hypomotor states (“freezes”)

Can we now influence the course of the disease?

Modern research is not only focusing on the symptoms, but also on the mechanisms that cause the disease, such as alpha-synuclein. The goal is to slow the progression of the disease, provide more targeted therapeutic intervention and address non-motor symptoms that affect the quality of life of patients.

What is changing in interventional therapies?

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). This is the most common surgical method. Tiny electrodes are implanted in specific brain structures, which are connected to a device (like a pacemaker) under the skin, and regulate brain activity with electrical pulses. This means better control of symptoms and fewer side effects.
MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS): This is the newest, non-invasive technique that uses ultrasound waves, guided by an MRI scanner, to heat and destroy tissues that cause tremors, without incisions or anesthesia.

How does technology contribute to daily management?

A multitude of wearable and digital applications allow for continuous monitoring of symptoms in real time, making it easier for the doctor to adjust the treatment with greater precision.

Is the treatment only pharmaceutical?

No. A holistic approach is crucial. Physical therapy, systematic physical exercise, speech therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and psychological support contribute substantially to maintaining functionality and quality of life.
