Scalp peeling

Scaly skin on a child’s scalp can be caused by several conditions — the most common are:

Possible causes:
1. Seborrheic dermatitis (infantile dandruff)

  • Very common cause, especially in the winter.
  • Appears as white or yellowish scales, with or without redness.
  • May cause mild itching.

2. Dry skin

  • Often due to frequent or “strong” shampooing, or from a very harsh shampoo.
  • The skin looks dull, dry, with small scales.
  • There is no inflammation or irritation.

3. Fungal infection (ringworm of the scalp)

  • Infectious cause, mainly in school-age children.
  • It is accompanied by redness, itching, severe peeling or local hair loss.
  • A medical diagnosis and treatment with antifungal drugs is needed.

4. Atopic dermatitis

  • If there is a history of allergies or dry skin.
  • The peeling is accompanied by redness, severe dryness and itching in many areas, not just the head.

5. Psoriasis

  • Rarely seen in children, but can occur.
  • Intense silvery scales and redness, may extend to the forehead or behind the ears.

What parents can do:

  • Use a mild children’s shampoo, without fragrance or sulfates.
  • Avoid daily shampooing – 2-3 times a week is enough.
  • Monitor for inflammation, hair loss or itching.
  • If it persists or worsens, see a pediatric dermatologist.
