Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty: Painless and Bloodless Treatment for Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids, commonly known as “hemorrhoids”, are one of the most common but also painful perianal diseases, which can however be treated completely, painlessly, bloodlessly and with absolute safety. Having developed an innovative method for the treatment of the disease and having successfully managed thousands of cases, the General Surgeon and specialist in anal diseases, Alkiviadis Pappas, Director of the Colon-Rectal Surgery Clinic at the Psychiko Hospital, explains what are the factors that cause hemorrhoids and how they can be ideally treated:
What are hemorrhoids and what is their function?
Hemorrhoids are a normal structure of our body. They are located where the intestine ends, in the part called the anus. They are not veins or arteries, but rather an intermediate vascular mass, and they look like little bags that fill with blood. When they are normal and healthy, they do not cause any problems. On the contrary, hemorrhoids seal the intestine at the anus, protecting us from leakage and enhancing continence. However, when hemorrhoids “break” then we talk about hemorrhoids.
What causes hemorrhoids and what should we pay attention to?
Although hemorrhoids are a very common condition (it is estimated that approximately 3 in 5 people will experience it at some point in their lives), the exact causes of the disease remain unclear.
However, several risk factors have been identified that are implicated. The main factor is chronic constipation and in general causes that cause frequent increases in intra-abdominal pressure, such as heavy work, chronic coughing and pregnancy. Aggravating factors are a sedentary lifestyle and obesity, poor hygiene of the anal area and the bad habit of prolonged stay on the toilet, and of course heredity.
What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?
The pathology of the disease has two basic elements: the swelling of the hemorrhoids and their prolapse. It manifests itself with asymptomatic or painful swelling, with pain in the anal ring area, as well as bleeding, mucus secretion, itching and causing a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying.
Are “hemorrhoids” curable and why shouldn’t we remove them?
Yes, hemorrhoids are completely curable, no matter how advanced the stage, with the application of the appropriate technique. It should be noted here, however, that hemorrhoids should never be removed at any stage of the disease. On the contrary, their removal is painful for the patient and creates very unpleasant complications, such as leakage of fluids from the anus and the involuntary release of gases, while it carries risks, especially when the hemorrhoids are swollen and have a large prolapse.
What is the ideal method for treating hemorrhoids?
The most modern and effective method for treating hemorrhoids is laser hemorrhoidoplasty. This is a pioneering technique that we have developed in our clinic, at the Psychiko Medical Center and have applied over the last 10 years to thousands of patients with impressive results. With laser hemorrhoidoplasty we achieve the most gentle and at the same time targeted intervention without affecting the anal sphincter and the intestinal mucosa. The method is painless and bloodless, lasts only 15 minutes, achieving a definitive result, without complications. The patient returns home the same day and is able to resume his daily activities from the very next day!
How can hemorrhoids be prevented?
Hemorrhoids are prevented by ensuring that we have good and timely bowel movements with soft stools and without straining to empty the bowel. Avoiding constipation is key, so exercising, walking, and adopting a high-fiber diet are best. We should also avoid sitting on the toilet for a long time and take care of good hygiene in the area.
