Press Release – Three-dimensional Imaging Examination of Mummies at the Athens Medical Group

The second phase of the research program Three-Dimensional Imaging Examination of Mummies of the Egyptian Collection of the National Archaeological Museum took place at the Athens Medical Group

On Saturday, June 10, 2023, the second and final phase of the research program Three-Dimensional Imaging Examination of Mummies of the Egyptian Collection of the National Archaeological Museum took place. The unique, innovative and pioneering program for Greek data was implemented in collaboration with the Athens Medical Group, the National Archaeological Museum and the Hellenic Institute of Egyptology. The Director of the CT/MRI Department of the Athens Medical Center Dr. Nikolaos Bondozoglou, together with his scientific team, carried out the examination of the four Ptolemaic mummies of the Egyptian Collection of the National Archaeological Museum (NAM).

The examination was carried out at the CT/MRI Department of the Athens Medical Center under the instructions and supervision of the Director of the Department, Dr. Nikolaos Bodozoglou with his scientific team.

This is a continuation of the first stage of the research, which took place in October 2016 and concerned five Ptolemaic mummies from the NAM Collection.

The last phase of the research program includes, in addition to the imaging examination of the four Ptolemaic mummies from the Egyptian Collection of the National Archaeological Museum (NAM) and their transfer.

The overall findings of the research will be presented at a conference, as well as in publications or announcements of the interdisciplinary study team.

Similar programs have been carried out in various countries with collections of Egyptian antiquities, including the USA and Great Britain, where the imaging examination was carried out in well-known university hospitals with the cooperation of the local Museums.

Warm thanks are due to the company Orpheus Veinoglou S.A., which fully undertook the expense and construction of the appropriate special boxes in which the mummies were placed and ensured their safe transport, as well as to the Hellenic Police for its assistance.
