Department of Radiation Oncology at the Athens Medical Center
At the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Athens Medical Center, for the last 20 years, we have set as our goal the provision of high quality personalized care to oncology patients.
Our Department has the most modern technological equipment
- Two state-of-the-art, high-dose-rate linear accelerators (Elekta Versa HDMT, Elekta Synergy Platform) with integrated imaging systems that offer great precision and speed and provide the ability to apply advanced radiotherapy techniques such as IMRT/VMAT technique and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT)
- A CT scanner simulation system (CT SIMULATOR) and advanced treatment planning systems (Monaco 5.1)
- An intracavitary brachytherapy system (Elekta Microselectron HDR) with high dose rate HDR Ir-191, with 3D planning
- MOSAIC patient treatment data management system to ensure the optimal execution of the radiotherapy procedure
We apply the most modern radiotherapy techniques which allow absolute precision in targeting radiation with the greatest protection of neighboring healthy tissues. These techniques provide the ability to increase the dose to the target tumor, increasing the likelihood of cure while further limiting the dose to healthy organs and therefore reducing potential side effects.
- Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D CONFORMAL RT)
- Intensity-modulated beam radiotherapy (IMRT)
- Volume-based arc radiotherapy (VMAT)
- Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT)
- Stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT) – highly targeted beams of radiation under image guidance to treat relatively small lesions anywhere in the patient’s body
- Deep-breathing radiotherapy (DIBH) – The This procedure allows the administration of the treatment during the inhalation phase, during which the distance of the heart from the mass gland is maximized while the dose of radiation received by the heart and lung is minimized.
The Oncology patient, from his first contact with the Department of Radiation Oncology of the Medical Center, is treated by a team of specialists who will individualize every aspect of his treatment. The assessment of each patient and the selection of the indicated treatment is made by decision of the Oncology Council based on the guidelines as well as the specific needs and requirements of each patient.
- Our Department is staffed with highly experienced, well-trained Radiation Therapists – Oncologists with many years of clinical experience, Radiation Physicists, Radiation Therapy Technologists, nursing staff specialized in Oncology and administrative staff. All staff have the required certifications and follow a continuing education program
- follows European and International treatment protocols personalized to the specifics of each patient’s treatment and participates in research protocols and studies
- follows the certification procedures according to ISO 9001 TEMOS and EXCELLENCE IN MEDICAL TOURISM
The technological equipment and the well-trained staff guarantee the best possible approach and treatment of all patients with neoplastic disease.
