Medical Transbalkan: Innovative restoration of tooth loss in very atrophic jaws

Thessaloniki, 26.7.2021.- An innovative treatment for the restoration of extensive tooth loss in patients for whom implant placement is not possible due to very severe bone deficiencies was successfully performed at the Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki.

The treatment, which was applied for the first time in Greece by Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Eleftherios Kalimeras, is intended for patients with severely atrophic upper and lower jaws and extensive or complete tooth loss, for whom conventional techniques (traditional prosthetic restoration) cannot be used, nor can alternative techniques (implants combined with bone graft placement).

“The new surgical restoration technique is performed using computer-assisted and guided planning. It involves the placement of a customized implantable titanium mesh (Grade 5) beneath the soft tissues of the mouth. It causes no functional or aesthetic discomfort. The prosthetic restoration of the mouth is securely and firmly attached to the mesh,” emphasizes Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Eleftherios Kalimeras.

The procedure

Regarding the procedure and the innovative mesh technique, the doctor states: “The company Custom Bone & Implant entrusted us with the first application of these specific European implants in Greece. The titanium mesh used is produced through selective laser melting using CAD-CAM system technology and is indicated for use in regenerative techniques for bone and jaw atrophy. Because the material is titanium, it does not present contraindications for the patient undergoing imaging examinations in the future. The results of the procedure we performed on the first patient were excellent.”

The oral restoration is carried out through the following process: A full-field cone beam computed tomography scan of the patient is obtained, and the data are sent to the manufacturing company, where the initial design of the customized implant is prepared. At this stage, all parameters are calculated in order to achieve the optimal result both surgically and functionally. These data are approved by the Maxillofacial Surgeon and then sent for production of the implantable material.

In the next phase, in the operating room and with the patient under general anesthesia, the titanium mesh is placed subperiosteally (beneath the gums), followed by the prosthetic restoration. The procedure is considerably safer than placing a bone graft harvested from distant parts of the body, while the overall results are exceptionally stable and safe during use,” concludes Dr. Eleftherios Kalimeras.

The Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki continues to implement innovative treatments in the field of Maxillofacial Surgery.
