Radiopeptide therapy for neuroendocrine tumors at the Inter-Balkan Medical Center

Thessaloniki, 23.3.2021.- Innovative, targeted radiopeptide therapy for neuroendocrine tumors, which achieves a high therapeutic benefit in patients who do not respond to other treatments, is being carried out at the Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki.

The innovative treatment with the approved therapeutic radiopharmaceutical LUTATHERA® (177Lu-DOTATATE) is applied in the specialized center for radioisotope therapies of the Department of Nuclear Medicine by the associate Nuclear Physician Dimitrios Drougkas, MD. The application of the treatment is carried out in very few Medical Centers in Greece and is approved by EOPYY.

As Nuclear Physician D. Drougkas notes, “radiopeptide therapy with LUTATHERA® is part of the THERAGNOSTICS approach to the management of patients with neuroendocrine tumors, i.e. both the radiopharmaceutical administered for SPECT or PET imaging – diagnosis and the therapeutic radiopharmaceutical target and bind by the same receptors. With this combination of targeted diagnosis and treatment, the selection of patients who will have the optimal therapeutic benefit is achieved to an absolute degree.

It should be noted that the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Inter-Balkan Medical Center also performs very modern treatments with the radiopharmaceutical XOFIGO (Ra-223) for the treatment of bone metastases in patients with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) as well as other treatments for the relief of bone pain in patients with multiple, painful osteoblastic bone metastases using other radiopharmaceuticals (Sm-153).

In the near future, targeted therapies with 177Lu-PSMA are also planned to be launched for the treatment of metastatic disease from castration-resistant prostate cancer.

The Department of Nuclear Medicine has the largest private open source therapeutic department (I-131) in Greece for the treatment of thyroid cancer.
