25th Scientific Conference of Greek Medical Students: World first for the Athens Medical Center with live 3D broadcast of robotic surgery

Athens 17 May 2019 – In the context of the 25th Scientific Conference of Medical Students of Greece & 13th International Forum of Medical Students and Young Doctors held on 10-12 May in Thessaloniki, a 3D robotic surgery was broadcast live, in 3D, from the Athens Medical Center, for the first time in Greece, but also worldwide. The surgery, on a 67-year-old woman with a hiatal hernia, gastroesophageal reflux and cholelithiasis, was performed at the Athens Medical Center by Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis, MD, PhD, FACS, Secretary of the CRSA World Scientific Society of Robotic Surgery, Scientific Director of the Athens Medical Group, Director of General, Oncology, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at the Athens Medical Center, Honorary President of the Southeastern European Robotic Surgery Society. The students awarded Dr. Konstantinidis an honorary distinction for his long-standing contribution to their conferences.

Christos G. Apostolopoulos, Vice President of the Athens Medical Group.

The operation, which was attended by approximately 800 students wearing special glasses, was performed with the latest technology modern Robotic surgery system, da Vinci Xi HD, version 2019 which was installed and fully operational since the beginning of the year at the Athens Medical Center. This system, special order for the Athens Medical Center, also has its own stapling tools that facilitate complex bowel surgeries for anastomoses to avoid colostomy, large and difficult hiatal hernias and all oncological surgeries. In this way, the need for open surgeries is almost eliminated, except in rare cases.

Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis, stated:

“Laparoscopic, with personal experience of over 16,000 operations and robotic, with experience of over 2,500 operations and Single Site Surgery, with over 500 operations, are in our hands the ideal way to treat most surgical problems of the intra-abdominal organs. We have minimized complications and maximized excellent results by avoiding large incisions.

Our technique for robotic repair of hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux, esophageal achalasia, inguinal hernia, abdominal hernia, weight loss surgeries, benign and malignant tumors of the colon, stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, adrenal glands, as well as robotic cholecystectomy through a single incision, have been routine procedures for us since 2006 with excellent surgical results. It is worth noting that all of these procedures have been performed by us laparoscopically since 1991, and robotically since 2006, but as technology evolves, we have better results for our patients. The goal is always to minimize hospitalization, avoid surgical infections and all postoperative complications related to the incisions. The firefly technology with the new robot makes all our oncological surgeries incredibly easy.

600 students wore special glasses during the live broadcast of the 3D robotic surgery, from the operating room of the Athens Medical Center. Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis, speaks to students about the 3D robotic surgery they watched live from the Athens Medical Center.

It is worth mentioning, among others, the single-site robotic surgery (Single Site Robotic Surgery), which was performed for the first time internationally in Greece, on March 1, 2011, while since then, more than 500 operations of this type have been successfully performed.

Since last week, all my laparoscopic operations are performed with a three-dimensional image provided by the new technology of the Athens Medical Center.

The Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis with the Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee, Medical student, George Lales.

We look forward to the new robotic systems that will be released on the market in the next 1-2 years and we are happy that our team is actively participating in all these exciting developments!

We thank the Athens Medical Center and especially the President, George V. Apostolopoulos, the CEO, Vasilis G. Apostolopoulos and the Vice President, Christos Apostolopoulos for fully equipping us with state-of-the-art laparoscopic and robotic technology that allows us to be at the forefront of developments and to be constantly many steps ahead. Proof of this is the fact that dozens of surgeons from hospitals all over the world visit us to watch and learn our techniques. The invitation to supervise other surgeons to start robotic surgery in major university hospitals in Europe and especially England is the highest honor for me! ”

Huge interest from students to watch the live broadcast of the 3D robotic surgery by Dr. Konstantinidis.

In the context of the Conference, the Vice President of the Athens Medical Group, Mr. Christos G. Apostolopoulos, spoke, among other things, about the decisive role that digital transformation plays in the Health sector: “In Medical Science and the Health Sector, it is already the new reality, with which we have been called upon to harmonize immediately. And, at the Medical Group, we did so promptly and comprehensively. We responded to the challenges with a plan, and achieved very significant results, both in the operation of hospitals and clinics, in our diagnostic capabilities, in the speed of processing and utilization of medical data, and in the entire spectrum of applications of medical science. We already have in our hands a series of tools and capabilities that are changing reality as we know it, with a shining example being robotic surgery, in which we have invested with determination since 2006, thus establishing ourselves as a leader in the industry in Greece and SE Europe. We believe in the future, we invest in it and we embrace it. We cannot remain outside the great dynamics that will change many of the constants of the field. We must and must be at the forefront. In other words, as we say and commit to the Iatriko Group, to always be one step ahead.”

It should be noted that the live 3D surgery broadcast was kindly sponsored by MEDI PRINOU.
