5th Neurology Department Seminar: “Neuroscience in the Vortex of COVID-19”

Writes Dr. Clementine E. Karageorgiou, Director of the Department of Neurology, Athens Medical Center

The Department of Neurology of the Athens Medical Center has been organizing a Panhellenic Conference every year since 2015 with a topical theme that always concerns the Neurosciences. During the years of COVID-19, the conference was not held and now, for the 6th year, it is being organized from 14 to 16 April 2022 at Lake Plastiras.

Each time, a region of Greece accessible to all Greek Neurologists is selected to hold the conference. The conference’s theme always concerns topical issues from a neurological perspective, as well as from a social, legal, cognitive and psychiatric perspective.

This year’s conference is held in collaboration with the scientific society Y.P.O.L.I.P.Y. under the auspices of the Medical Association of Karditsa and the Municipality of Karditsa.

The theme of the 6th Conference is related to a unique topical problem of recent years worldwide. It discusses Neuroscience in the midst of COVID-19.

Issues that arise in the various individual neurological diseases under the heavy cloud of COVID such as Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Extrapyramidal Diseases, Vascular Strokes, Headache, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromuscular Diseases, Cognitive Disorders, Rare Diseases that are treated in today’s era as well as Telemedicine and new technologies in the era of COVID-19 are analyzed.

The aim of the conference is to present, on the one hand, the impact of COVID-19 on various neurological diseases and how they are treated, and on the other hand, to present the steps of progress made at the Athens Medical Center in recent difficult years, with the official operation of the Stroke Unit, which has been structured and operates since 2015 according to the specifications of the European Stroke Organization (ESO). Another aim is to provide information on the creation of a Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs Clinic with the collaboration of cardiologists, pulmonologists and other specialties.

This conference reflects the way the Athens Medical Center operates not as a private health institution that only transports patients, but as a center of science, holistic catalytic treatment of patients, research, technology and progress that follows modern Medicine and Technology in all areas.
