New, effective surgical techniques in the treatment of Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological cancer in developed countries. Unfortunately, approximately 25% of cases of this neoplasm are recorded even before menopause and it is the seventh cause of death from cancer in women in Europe. Due to the fact that the average life expectancy of women is increasing as well as metabolic syndromes with accompanying obesity, we expect a significant increase in the frequency of the disease.

Early diagnosis and Symptoms:

With gynecological ultrasound we can evaluate the thickness and shape of the endometrium, which can warn us of the existence of endometrial hyperplasia or an early stage of cancer. In the majority of cases, of course, endometrial cancer is accompanied by vaginal bleeding, a sign that women should never ignore. Unfortunately, however, a very large portion of sufferers, even today, do not follow the annual gynecological check-up, as a result of which they do not detect the disease at an early stage, with very unpleasant consequences.

It is very important for patients to contact specialized Gynecological Oncologists so that initially no wrong steps are made in the strategy of treating the disease that are irreversible! At Diabalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki we perform the most modern and effective treatment for Endometrial Cancer using robotic surgery.

Top-notch expertise and organized hospital structures at the service of patients:

Robotic Surgery (Da Vinci) offers us the absolutely precise surgical manipulation in endometrial cancer. With its Firefly technology, it helps us to accurately perform the sentinel lymph node biopsy, i.e. removal of only the first lymph node, with ICG fluorescence technology and to avoid unnecessary pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection, thus reducing the risk of postoperative complications such as lymphedema. It has been reported that 37.4% of patients who underwent radical lymphadenectomy for endometrial cancer developed lymphedema of the lower extremities.

On the other hand, it is very important that the sentinel lymph node technique is performed correctly, by specialized Gynecological Oncologists, with experience in Robotic Surgery, otherwise the staging may be incomplete, if the correct lymph node is not removed, affecting the patient’s survival expectancy.

Robotic Surgery offers us more sophisticated tools, three-dimensional technology, stable handling, resulting in excellent surgical precision and results, such as shorter hospital stay, faster mobilization, less blood loss, fewer adhesions and complications as well as a certain oncological outcome. The combination of a well-trained surgeon with the capabilities of the Da-Vinci system, offers us the possibility of detailed preparation of tissues, nerves and vessels, providing perfect results.
