Robotic Surgery and the application of innovative techniques in the treatment of gynecological diseases and gynecological cancer

At Diabalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki we treat the full range of health problems that plague women’s lives. In modern times, symptoms of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse with incontinence, ovarian tumors and other benign pathologies should be investigated immediately and treated.

Robotic Surgery and gynecological procedures

Robotic Surgery with the Da Vinci system offers us the absolutely precise surgical manipulation in the treatment of complex gynecological procedures, such as difficult hysterectomies and removal of large uteruses.

Also, infertility problems in couples due to endometriosis or adhesions from a previous infection, which require salpingoplasty, can be treated with absolute precision, in order to have perfect results.

We can now remove large and multiple uterine fibroids, using advanced techniques, such as in-bag morcellation, i.e. cutting the tumor into an intra-abdominal bag and removing it without leaving any residue in the abdomen.

Urogynecology and invasive techniques

In the field of Urogynecology, we apply innovative endoscopic techniques, such as pectopexy, Burch using natural tissues or synthetic meshes, which come to solve problems such as prolapse and incontinence.

Even anterior colporrhaphy, i.e. the correction of the bladder in the case of cystocele, can be performed endoscopically, without incisions in the vagina, a technique that is performed in very few centers abroad worldwide.

A key point in the treatment of these patients is the correct diagnosis of the lesion and targeted treatment by choosing the appropriate surgical technique, which requires knowledge, experience and surgical skill.

Gynecological cancer and specialized treatment

Regarding gynecological cancer, in large countries abroad, the specialized gynecological oncologist is the only one competent to treat patients with cancer of the breast, ovaries, uterus, vulva, cervix and vagina, as it has been proven that this improves the survival expectancy and the possibility of complete recovery of patients.

In the treatment of these diseases, it is very important that the plan is designed by experienced gynecological oncologists and, in the case of surgical treatment, to use specialized techniques such as:

  • nerve sparing radical hysterectomy
  • targeted axillary dissection
  • debulking surgery TROMP
  • V-Y fascio-cutaneous gluteal flap

The gynecological oncologist is also responsible for the prevention and postoperative monitoring of cancer patients.

Robotic surgery in oncology

Robotic Surgery enables the treatment of endometrial cancer to accurately perform a sentinel lymph node biopsy, i.e. removing only the first lymph node and avoiding an unnecessary radical lymph node dissection, thus reducing the risk of postoperative complications such as lymphedema.

In addition to minimizing complications, the advantages for the patient are many, such as less anesthesia, less blood loss and a faster return to daily life, with a certain oncological result of course.

Robotic surgery and overweight patients

In particular, overweight patients seem to have an extremely good outcome with the use of robotic surgery.

The Da Vinci Xi device uses longer, improved tools that move in all directions, which are lifted by the robot’s arms, allowing the surgeon to operate with less intra-abdominal pressure, which can reduce patient morbidity.

Greek patients can now enjoy top-level health services from distinguished doctors who have directed the most renowned medical centers abroad.
