Management of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Developments, Challenges and Encouragement

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), a chronic autoimmune disease, requires careful management to regulate blood sugar levels. With the help of technological advances, lifestyle modifications, and family encouragement, children with T1DM can live full lives in modern society.

Rapid advances in medical technology have changed the way diagnoses like T1DM affect patients’ lives. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices and insulin pumps have revolutionized the way patients manage their condition – minimizing health risks and the ways it impacts an active lifestyle. Youth with T1D using a real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device and an insulin pump have significantly higher Time in Range, are more likely to achieve recommended goals, and have a lower chance of serious adverse events compared to youth using other treatment methods.

SWEET Study: With a recommended time range goal (70-180 mg/dL) of greater than 70%, the proportion of youth achieving this goal was higher among those using real-time CGM plus an insulin pump (36.2%). This rate was second highest among those using real-time CGM plus injection (20.9%), followed by intermittent scanning CGM plus injection (12.5%), then intermittent scanning CGM plus insulin pump (11.3%).

The same study found that real-time CGM use with or without an insulin pump was associated with a lower proportion of youth experiencing severe hypoglycemic episodes compared to intermittent scanning CGM with or without an insulin pump.

Advances in technology provide families with a more immediate and easier way to monitor and treat their child’s diabetes, even remotely. It further reduces the stress of planning outings and meals in the future. And it allows for greater flexibility for a child who is active in activities such as sports and dance.

Along with technological advances, lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in managing T1DM. Nutrition education and meal planning help children make informed choices about their diet, allowing for better blood sugar control. Regular exercise is essential, as it improves insulin sensitivity and overall well-being. In addition, stress management techniques, such as meditation and mindfulness, can help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Encouraging people with T1DM to take an active role in their care is paramount. Education about the condition, its management, and potential complications empowers patients to make informed decisions. Setting realistic goals and creating a support network of healthcare professionals, family, and peers promotes a sense of control and self-confidence.

It is critical that the patient and their family receive comprehensive medical care and education from a multidisciplinary team of professionals, such as the one at Athens Pediatric Center, who are aware of the technological options available today, as well as those on the horizon.
