Dr. Konstantinos M. Konstantinidis: Leading Robotic General Surgeon in the World

The Greek surgeon of the Athens Medical Group, Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis, who was awarded by Intuitive Surgical as the world’s leading general surgeon in robotic surgery, was ranked first in the world of robotic surgery.

The American company, based in California, USA, manufactures the Da Vinci surgical robotic systems, which have revolutionized the field of minimally invasive surgery. Recognizing the 15-year contribution, medical pioneering, the extremely large number of successful procedures, as well as the educational work of Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis to fellow surgeons and medical students, at an international and national level, honors the Greek general surgeon by ranking him in first place worldwide in the field of General Surgery.

Worldwide leader in the field of robotic surgery

Dr. Konstantinidis is the first surgeon in Greece and Southeastern Europe to implement robotic surgery in 2006. At the same time, he was a pioneer worldwide when, after an invitation from Intuitive Surgical, he performed the world’s first single-incision robotic surgery, as well as many other first robotic surgeries that followed.

In the 15 years he has been practicing robotic surgery, he has performed more than 3,500 surgeries. Combined with the more than 16,500 laparoscopic surgeries he has performed, his experience in minimally invasive surgery exceeds the milestone of 20,000 surgeries.

The prominent robotic general surgeon of the Athens Medical Center, in his 30 years of presence in Greece, has been a mentor to hundreds of Greek and foreign surgeons, who daily honor him with their achievements in hospitals in Europe and the USA.

Intuitive Surgical awarded this important distinction to Dr. Konstantinidis, also taking into account that he performs surgical procedures across the entire spectrum of general surgery. Specifically, his vast experience concerns surgeries of the esophagus – stomach, pancreas, liver – biliary tract, small and large intestine, obesity and metabolic surgery, abdominal wall hernias, athlete’s hernia, adrenal glands, spleen, internal genital organs and retroperitoneal tumors.

The Athens Medical Group, a global training center

The leadership presence of Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis in robotic general surgery and the advanced robotic machines purchased by the Athens Medical Group serve as a magnet for many hospital surgeons worldwide, who travel to Athens and the Athens Medical Center to be trained by the distinguished physician.

At the same time, he is honored with many invitations annually by his colleagues worldwide for supervising them in their first robotic surgery performances.

Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis stated during the award ceremony: “The distinction from Intuitive Surgical is a great thrill for me. The fact that in Athens we offer our patients the excellent surgical solution to their problems with leading aerospace technology is a great honor for me, my team, the Medical Group and our country. Our results and our vast experience bring us to first place worldwide with this important distinction. I would like to thank the President of the Athens Medical Group Dr. George Apostolopoulos, the CEO, Dr. Vasilis Apostolopoulos and the Vice President, Mr. Christos Apostolopoulos for fully equipping us with state-of-the-art laparoscopic and robotic technology that allows us to be at the forefront of developments and to be constantly, not one, but many steps ahead. This specific distinction from Intuitive Surgical obliges me to continue at the same unabated pace to offer my patients the best techniques for the best results. But above all, it commits me to continue teaching robotic surgery to all young surgeons from all over the world. I expect that my involvement with 5G technology in combination with the robotic platform will allow for the distance education of surgeons who are unable to visit the Athens Medical Center.”
