Echolaser: targeted, minimally invasive treatment for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and one of the leading causes of death from malignancies of the genitourinary system. However, early diagnosis and the development of therapeutic techniques have made the disease manageable, even curable, if diagnosed in the early stages.

Most patients are diagnosed thanks to preventive screening with PSA (prostate-specific antigen) and digital examination, while confirmation is made with transperineal biopsy Fusion. Depending on the degree of malignancy and the extent of the tumor, the appropriate treatment strategy is selected.

Revolutionary approach: Echolaser technology

Echolaser technology brings a new minimally invasive approach to the treatment of localized prostate cancer. It is a targeted thermal ablation method, which eliminates cancer cells without a scalpel, without amputation of the organ and with absolute precision, while maintaining the functionality of the prostate.

The treatment is performed under ultrasound guidance, through very thin laser fibers, which are safely placed in the cancerous nodule. The process begins with a preoperative check in the operating room, using the advanced Fusion system.

This system combines the images of the patient’s multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging with real-time ultrasound imaging. Thus, the surgeon has a three-dimensional image of the lesion in front of him, on the Echolaser screen, which allows him to guide the laser’s optical fibers to the site of the lesion with extreme precision.

Then, through thermal cauterization, the cancerous tissue is destroyed in a targeted manner, without affecting the structure and function of the prostate or the adjacent neurovascular bundles. The thermal energy released causes precise and controlled necrosis of the tumor, leaving the surrounding tissues intact, which is extremely important for maintaining erection, continence and the patient’s quality of life.

Advantages of the Echolaser method

The Echolaser method brings together multiple benefits for the patient, combining effectiveness with functional preservation:

  • Minimally invasive & targeted, without incisions, with local anesthesia or light intoxication
  • Hospitalization of only 3 hours, return home the same day
  • Avoiding incontinence
  • Maintain erectile function, do not injure the angioneuronal bundles
  • Maintaining ejaculation, preserving normal sexual function
  • Suitable for elderly or high surgical patients risk

Who is the method for?

The Echolaser technique is suitable for:

  • Men with localized prostate cancer (stage T1c–T2a)
  • Patients with low or moderate Gleason score
  • Cases where the tumor is unifocal and confirmed by biopsy
  • Patients who wish to preserve sexual and urological function
  • Those who desire an alternative to radical prostatectomy or radiation

Echolaser is an important step towards a new philosophy in the treatment of prostate cancer: no longer a generalized treatment with a high cost for functionality, but a focused, personalized intervention aimed at treating the tumor, without sacrificing the patient’s quality of life.

Echolaser therapy for the focused treatment of prostate cancer is applied in Greece, at the Iatriko Psychiko Clinic, by Dr. Brembo and his specialized team.

Dr. Brembo was the first in the world to apply the EchoLaser technology by placing radiopaque markers, clearly visible on MRI, which enhance the accuracy in targeting the cancerous lesion and improve the effectiveness of the treatment.

It is worth noting that the Psychiko Medical Clinic operates as a recognized Center for the Application and Training of the Echolaser method, attracting doctors from Greece and abroad.
