Endoscopic treatment of the coccygeal cyst: Modern, painless and bloodless method
Cyst of the coccyx – Epidemiology
This is a fairly common, benign condition. In men, it occurs 2 to 4 times more often than in women. Its onset may be more common in young girls and we suspect that this is due to the earlier onset of puberty.
What causes the appearance of a cyst of the coccyx
Its causes are not exactly known.
What we know is that the hairs are normally found in the so-called follicle or hair follicle and it is precisely this follicle that enlarges, ruptures and consequently becomes inflamed and creates the cyst of the coccyx.
What plays a role in this:
– Hormones, which are particularly developed in young men and women due to puberty
– Increased hair growth
– Friction, such as tight pants and prolonged sitting, especially in hard chairs (office, school, home, long hours while reading or playing on the computer)
– Local inflammation from a blow or injury.
– Obesity, as people with a little more weight more often experience inflammation in the coccyx.
Surgical treatment of the coccyx cyst
The surgical treatment of the coccyx cyst is a procedure that has evolved significantly over time. Initially, the traditional method involved removing the cyst with closed or open surgery. In the closed method, the cyst and fistulas are removed and the wound is sutured, while in the open method the wound is left to heal naturally.
However, the most modern approach is endoscopic excision of the coccygeal cyst, known as EPSiT (Endoscopic Pilonidal Sinus Treatment).
This method uses a special endoscope (fistuloscope) to remove the cyst and fistulas through a small incision, under direct vision and magnification, with the help of a camera, offering many advantages over older methods.
The advantages of the endoscopic technique:
1. Reduced pain after the operation, allowing the patient to return to their daily activities almost immediately.
2. Minimal bleeding due to the hemostasis offered by modern machines.
3. No changes are needed that were so distressing to patients in the past
4. Smaller incisions and respect for tissues, leading to faster healing.
5. Almost non-existent risk of infection and recurrence of the cyst.
6. The operation is short, lasting approximately 10-15 minutes, with the patient being able to be discharged the same day.
The endoscopic method requires specialized training and equipment available at Diabalkan Medical as well as experience from the surgeon for this specific method.
The success of this method has made EPSiT a preferred option for many patients and surgeons, offering a less invasive and more effective solution to the treatment of coccygeal cyst. With its application, patients regain their quality of life with minimal disruption and quickly return to their daily lives.
