Successful treatment of an extremely complex thoracoabdominal aneurysm in the new Hybrid Room of the Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki

An extremely demanding and technically difficult operation to treat a large and complex thoracoabdominal aneurysm was performed with great success by Dr. Nikolaos Melas, Director of the First Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki, in the Hybrid Robotic Surgery Room “Hyperion” available at our Hospital.

Dr. Melas placed endo-staplers in a thoracic endograft, which was used to treat the complex thoracoabdominal aneurysm with precarious support, in a 62-year-old patient. This specific technique was based on the thesis and the experimental protocol carried out by Dr. N. Melas at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine Anatomical Services Laboratory, Baltimore, Maryland USA, in 2010.

“I am particularly proud that such a high technology, which enables us to “sew” endografts internally through the artery, was invented, approved by the FDA and implemented worldwide, based on a Greek experimental study. “I am also particularly happy that the ultra-modern “Hyperion” Hybrid Room of the Interbalkan Medical Center allows us to apply everything we were trained for,” emphasized Dr. Melas after the completion of the operation.

Today, in the new Hybrid Room of the Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki, the most modern materials and technological means are provided, which, in combination with the excellent medical training and specialization of the team of the First Vascular Surgery Clinic, provide the opportunity to perform the most demanding treatment procedures. thoracoabdominal aneurysms, as well as aortic arch, providing a solution to patients who, in the past, had no treatment options.

Now, no thoracoabdominal aneurysm is inoperable and all are treated without open surgery, without hospitalization in the intensive care unit, intravascularly and percutaneously with day hospitalization.
