Specialized treatment by the Embolism Unit of the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki to a 14-year-old patient from the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “Ippokrateio”
Thessaloniki, November 17, 2020 – As part of the cooperation of the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki (IBTH) for the auxiliary support of the National Health Service on-call services concerning non-Covid-19 cases, a case of intracerebral hemorrhage in a 14-year-old patient was treated with complete success by the IBTH Embolism Unit, which is the only one of its kind in the whole of Northern Greece.
Specifically, the 14-year-old was admitted to our hospital from the G.N.Th. “Ippokrateio”, on Sunday, November 16, with intracerebral hemorrhage due to rupture of the cerebral arteriovenous communication. The young patient was admitted to the Embolization Unit of the National Institute of Health and underwent, immediately, embolization with liquid embolic material ONYX, by Dr. Vasilis Katsaridis, MD, PhD Neurosurgeon, Medical Interbalkan of Thessaloniki. The embolization was completed with complete success, resulting in complete occlusion of the communication. After the end of the operation, the 14-year-old was discharged the same day, returning to the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “Ippokrateio” in excellent general and neurological condition.
At this point, it should be mentioned that the program of co-auxiliary on-calls of the Medical Inter-Balkan Hospital of Thessaloniki with the on-call hospitals of the National Health System, for non Covid-19 cases, continues normally. Today, Tuesday, November 17, it supports the on-call of the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “Papanicolaou”, as well as ICU cases from all over Northern Greece, which are transported according to the scheduling of the Emergency Department. In addition, and with the aim of further supporting the already burdened system, in addition to the nursing ward with a capacity of 50 beds (44 hospital beds and 6 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds), it allocated another two (2) ICU beds, reaching the total number available in the National Health System, eight (8).
For the Athens Medical Group, in addition to providing high-level health services, the top priority remains the safety of its patients, staff and doctors. To this end, the strict measures and protocols for admission and stay that have been established are fully implemented, including the mandatory molecular testing for the virus of all patients and their companions.
