Why is his ear blocked?

Possible causes of a “plugged” ear:

1. Accumulation of wax (wax)
The most common cause in children.
The wax blocks the canal and causes hearing loss or a feeling of pressure.
Only a doctor should clean it — no cotton swabs.

2. Otitis media (middle or external)
If accompanied by pain, fever, or fluid drainage, there may be an infection.
Otitis media with fluid (without pain) is common after viral infections.

3. Fluid behind the eardrum (secretory otitis)
Common in preschool children.
Causes a “plugged” ear, mild hearing loss, difficulty understanding or even speaking.
May require monitoring and/or referral to an ENT specialist.

4. Pressure changes (e.g. on an airplane or at high altitude)
Temporary blockage due to poor functioning of the Eustachian tube.
It usually goes away on its own – yawning or swallowing helps.

5. Allergies or rhinitis
Inflammation in the nasal cavity blocks the Eustachian tubes.
It is accompanied by snoring, sneezing, “mold” in the nose.

When to visit a pediatrician or ENT:

  • If the “blockage” is repeated or continuous.
  • If it is accompanied by pain, fluid discharge, or fever.
  • If the child does not hear well, speaks louder, or frequently asks for repetitions.
  • If there is a history of ear infections or sleep apnea.

Conclusion: There is no need to panic, but it is good to see it in a timely manner, especially if it affects the child’s hearing or daily life.
