George Papaioannou is an interventional cardiologist. He was born and raised in Larissa. He graduated first at the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. After fulfilling his military obligations and field service, he left for the USA, where he remained for seven years, taking the specialties of Pathology, Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology, at Tufts University in Boston and Connecticut respectively. He has extensive experience in modern endovascular interventional techniques in both coronary and peripheral vessels. He was the main organizer and main person in charge of the program of combined pharmaceutical and interventional therapy in acute myocardial infarction from 2000 to 2004 at the University of Connecticut. With a university scholarship, he obtained a Master’s degree in Public Health with a focus on clinical research.
He has spoken and presented his research at major American and European conferences on clinical and interventional cardiology. He has published articles and chapters in leading international journals on vascular endothelial dysfunction, nuclear cardiology, and invasive treatment of acute myocardial infarction with angioplasty. He is a member of the American, European, and Hellenic Cardiological Societies, as well as the American and European Societies of Interventional Cardiology. He actively participates in the activities of the European and Greek Interventional Cardiology Group, with the aim of recording and clinical monitoring of interventional procedures, while he was the main organizer and responsible for the pan-Hellenic registration of coronary interventions (2008-2011) carried out by the Interventional Cardiology Working Group of the Hellenic Cardiological Society.
Since September 2004, he has been practicing interventional cardiology in Greece and at the Athens Medical Center. His main area of expertise is the invasive treatment of coronary artery disease, including the immediate treatment of acute myocardial infarction on a daily basis (primary angioplasty). In the hemodynamic laboratory, he uses new technology as well as minimally invasive techniques (coronary angiography and angioplasty from the radial artery of the hand) with excellent results. He also deals with the invasive treatment of peripheral vascular disease (angioplasty of the subclavian, carotid, renal and iliac arteries) as well as congenital and structural heart diseases in adults (patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect, aortic isthmus stenosis, left atrial appendage closure), the invasive treatment of arterial hypertension (renal artery ablation) and, in collaboration with the cardiac surgery department, percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI or TAVR) and percutaneous mitral valve correction (Mitraclip).
