Sunburn and Heatstroke

During the summer months in our country, prolonged exposure to solar radiation is inevitable and, consequently, our living in conditions of increased ambient temperature.

It is, therefore, appropriate to inform and alert all of us about a pathological condition of major importance, known as sunburn or hyperthermia.

Sunburn is a pathological condition of the body that results from prolonged exposure to conditions of increased ambient temperature, during which the homeostatic thermoregulation mechanisms of our body are unable to cope adequately, resulting in the presence of pathological symptoms.

The spectrum of these symptoms varies depending on the severity of the disease, potentially manifesting in an early phase disorders such as:

  • hyperhidrosis
  • skin redness
  • tinnitus
  • headache
  • intense feeling of dizziness and tendency to vomit.

In a more severe form (heat stroke), in addition to the presence of high fever, the symptoms concern:

  • central nervous system disorders with possible loss of consciousness
  • generalized convulsions
  • hallucinations and/or delirium
  • as well as the cardiovascular system with tachycardia and hemodynamic instability

In the context of preventing this potentially life-threatening condition, we should emphasize the necessity of following general measures such as:

  • avoiding exposure to the sun during midday hours
  • avoiding alcohol abuse and adequate hydration
  • using sunscreen
  • wearing light clothing as well as
  • trying to minimize physical exertion

In the context of providing first aid or treatment upon the appearance of symptoms compatible with sunstroke or heatstroke, it is appropriate to emphasize the necessity of transferring the patient to a shady and cool place as well as administering hydration agents to him, until his assessment by specialized medical and nursing staff.

In summary, as health service providers, we stand by the citizen and draw his attention to a significant and potentially dangerous health problem that concerns all of us, but especially the sensitive age and vulnerable population groups.
