Endometrial Cancer: Modern Treatment with Minimally Invasive Techniques

Endometrial cancer is the most common malignancy of the female reproductive system in developed countries, mainly affecting postmenopausal women. Modern gynecological oncology now has advanced diagnostic and treatment methods, which significantly improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients.

Surgical Treatment

The main treatment method for endometrial cancer is the surgical removal of the uterus (total hysterectomy). The operation is accompanied by the removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes, as well as the investigation of the lymph nodes to assess the spread of the disease. The choice of surgical technique depends on several factors, such as the stage of the disease, the patient’s age and her overall health.

In recent years, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), via laparoscopic or robotic techniques, has emerged as the most appropriate approach. These methods offer multiple advantages:

  • Minor surgical trauma
  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Limited risk of infections and complications, such as lymphedema, bleeding, thrombosis, postoperative hernia.
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery

The Frou Lymph Node Technique and the Use of Indocyanine Green (ICG)

One of the most important innovations in the surgical treatment of endometrial cancer is the sentinel lymph node technique. With the use of indocyanine green (ICG) we can identify the lymph nodes that first come into contact with cancer cells. This allows for a targeted and less extensive removal of lymph nodes, thus significantly reducing the risk of lymphedema.

This method is particularly important for overweight patients, who are at increased risk of postoperative complications. Since indocyanine green is not visible to the human eye, the use of special imaging systems is required to detect it.

Robotic Surgery and the DaVinci Xi System

Robotic surgeryhas transformed the treatment of endometrial cancer, offering greater precision and detailed three-dimensional imaging of the surgical field. The DaVinci Xi robotic system, which has an integrated Firefly camera, allows for precise visualization of indocyanine green, making the sentinel lymph node method extremely reliable. Thanks to robotic technology, we have the ability to perform procedures with greater precision, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring the best possible outcome for our patients.

Endometrial cancer can be effectively treated with modern surgical techniques. Minimally Invasive Surgery, combined with robotic technology and the sentinel lymph node technique, offers patients a safer and less traumatic treatment.

At Athens Medical Center, the most modern methods are applied in the treatment of endometrial cancer, using the most advanced technological equipment. Our specialized medical team utilizes the latest innovations in robotic surgery and minimally invasive techniques, ensuring maximum safety and effectiveness for each patient.
