Lipedema: The misunderstood condition that affects the lives of thousands of women

Lipodema is a chronic and progressive condition, mainly affecting women, characterized by a disorder in the distribution and function of adipose tissue, especially in the extremities. Despite the fact that it affects approximately 12% of women in Europe, the disease remains underdiagnosed and is often misinterpreted as obesity.

Lipodema manifests itself with a characteristic disproportion in the body: a thin torso and excessively full extremities (legs and arms), without responding to diet or exercise. This is because lipoedema cells do not store fat like normal cells, but mainly contain lymphatic fluid, which makes them resistant to metabolic change.

The condition is not limited to appearance. It is accompanied by intense symptoms, such as:

  • Feeling of heaviness in the extremities
  • Sensitivity to pressure, cold and touch
  • Pain with fatigue and later even at rest
  • Easily bruising without injury
  • Feeling of shame, social withdrawal, even depression

This psychosomatic burden is often intensified by the non-recognition of the condition by the environment and some health professionals.

Diagnosis and rehabilitation

A correct diagnosis is based not only on clinical assessment by a specialized plastic surgeon or vascular surgeon, but also on special imaging tests such as ultrasound and 3D body scan, which capture the disproportion of adipose tissue.

The therapeutic approach initially includes conservative measures such as lymphatic drainage, the use of special elastic garments and physiotherapy. However, the only definitive solution for pathological accumulations is surgical removal.

The surgical treatment of lipedema is not cosmetic liposuction. It is a targeted intervention with a triple goal:

  1. Relief of symptoms
  2. Prevention of deterioration
  3. Aesthetic restoration of the body

Surgeons specializing in lipedema apply adapted liposuction techniques, in order to achieve not only a symmetrical result but also improvement of the patient’s daily functionality.

The critical step: Information

Information remains the most crucial step, especially in Greece, where ignorance about lipedema leads to delayed diagnoses or incorrect treatments. Recognizing the symptoms, understanding the nature of the condition, and early visit to a specialist are essential for relieving and restoring the quality of life of women living with this underestimated, but very real disease.
