New achievement in Robotic Liver Surgery at the Athens Medical Center

The team of the Department of Liver – Biliary – Pancreas of the Athens Medical Center continues to pioneer in the most difficult and demanding field of advanced surgery, with classical, laparoscopic and robotic approaches. The specialized team of the Athens Medical Group performed yet another pioneering, for Greek standards, complex and high-risk liver surgery on a patient with a rare tumor.

More specifically, a patient from abroad who was recently diagnosed with a 13-centimeter tumor in the center of the liver and in direct contact with the large vessels (hepatic veins, arteries and bile ducts) and with a history of multiple abdominal surgeries as a result of a traffic accident, was referred to one of the most specialized teams for treatment with robotic surgery.

The team of the Department of Liver – Biliary – Pancreas, relying on their overall experience as managers of surgical oncology units, as well as their specialization acquired in leading European centers, gave the patient the opportunity to enjoy all the advantages of Robotic – Minimally Invasive Surgery.

With a purely robotic operation, the team members managed to both approach the tumor and remove it bloodlessly, safely, effectively and through 5 small incisions of a few millimeters.

The pioneering operation for Greek standards enabled the patient to recover immediately without pain and large incisions and to fully return to her activities within a few days.

Modern Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery and Robotic Surgical Oncology today require a holistic approach, specialization and experience that ensures the oncological outcome with maximum benefit and minimum risk. The Athens Medical Center and the Department of Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery, with a commitment to ethics and medical deontology, have built a center of excellence in this field.

Both the Group and the heads of the department, Emeritus Professor of Surgery, NKUA Papalambros E., Associate Professor of Surgery, EUC Petrou A., Assistant Professor of Surgery, NKUA Papalambros A. and Specialist Surgeon Diamantis D., are committed to selflessly continuing the effort to develop and establish advanced surgery within our medical community, for the benefit of the patient.
