Sarcomas: When does a lump need to be checked?
Sarcomas are one of the rarest, but also the most difficult to treat forms of cancer. They often appear “silently”, in the form of a seemingly innocent lump or unexplained pain, symptoms that many tend to ignore, attributing them to fatigue, intense exercise or a simple minor injury.
However, early recognition of these signs is crucial for the outcome of the disease, as early diagnosis can determine the success of treatment, which must always follow strictly predefined steps.
What are sarcomas and why are they considered such demanding tumors?
Sarcomas are rare, but particularly aggressive tumors that develop in soft tissues (e.g. muscles, tendons, adipose tissue) or bones. Their rarity often leads to delayed diagnosis, as they are not easily recognized in the early stages, which significantly complicates treatment. Therefore, early recognition of suspicious symptoms and immediate referral to a specialized treatment center are crucial steps for a better therapeutic outcome.
What are the first warning signs? When should a lump worry us?
The first symptom that we should never ignore is a lump, a small “lump” on the arm, leg or even the trunk. Most of the time it can be something completely innocent, but in some cases it is the first sign of a sarcoma.
Equally important is pain that persists without an obvious cause. This is pain that:
• is not associated with an injury
• persists for weeks
• gradually increases in intensity and duration
• in some cases occurs during the night
Can a sarcoma manifest itself suddenly?
In some, although rare, cases, a sarcoma can manifest itself more suddenly and with more serious clinical signs. A typical example is a fracture without any significant injury. This can happen when a sarcoma is located in a bone, which can weaken its structure and strength. Such manifestations are not the norm, however, when we are dealing with a fracture that is not explained by the clinical picture or the patient’s history, our degree of suspicion should be high. Do sarcomas also affect young people or is it mainly a disease of older people? data-contrast=”auto”> can occur at any age. In fact, the percentage of sarcomas among all cancers that occur in childhood is many times higher than the corresponding percentage in adults. This makes them even more insidious, as many young people and children (including their parents) attribute a pain or a lump exclusively to sports activity, strain or a blow. Vigilance, therefore, is not a matter of age. It is a matter of proper information and recognition of warning symptoms.
How crucial is the role of specialized centers in diagnosis and treatment?
In sarcomas, specialization is vital. Diagnosis, biopsy, surgical treatment and oncological treatment as a whole must be carried out in Centers with proven experience, and especially where there is access to a multidisciplinary team.
The 1st Clinic of Orthopedic Oncology of the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki is the first organized private sector unit in Greece dedicated exclusively to bone and soft tissue tumors. The Clinic provides early diagnosis, specialized surgical treatment and comprehensive care for benign, malignant and metastatic tumors of the musculoskeletal system.
The Clinic team applies modern limb preservation, osteosynthesis and reconstruction techniques for metastatic fractures, while collaborating interdisciplinary with pathologists – oncologists, radiologists, nuclear physicians, pathologists and radiation therapists. The treatment provided is individualized, aiming to maintain functionality and relieve pain, always with oncological safety as the first concern.
