The Biopathology Laboratory of the Athens Medical Center

The Biopathology Laboratory of the Athens Medical Center operates on a 24-hour basis and covers the needs of both internal and external pediatric and adult patients, in all areas of a modern and fully organized Biopathology center.

Placing the patient and his safety as the highest priority, we implement a Quality Management System according to ISO 15189:2012 and the laboratory was accredited by the National Accreditation System (ESYD).

Departments of the Biopathology Laboratory

  • Hematology – Hemostasis
  • Immunobiochemical-Hormonological
  • Immunological
  • Microbiological
  • Urochemical
  • Molecular Biology

When equipping the new laboratory, emphasis was placed on the development of cutting-edge automated systems, which improve the quality of the tests and reduce their processing time.

The installation of a robotic pre-analysis system in combination with the installation and operation of an innovative sample transport and receipt system ensures full traceability and identification of the samples and minimizes the possibility of error due to human intervention.

The immunobiochemical and hematological analyzers are state-of-the-art, highly productive and highly reliable and perform the tests with new generation reagents that meet all specifications and certifications.

The Microbiology Department of the Laboratory has added:

  • MALDI TOF mass spectrometry analyzer which identifies microbes from positive cultures in biological samples of patients in just ten minutes, compared to 24 hours of classical identification, thus shortening the total time to complete the culture.
  • Molecular analyzer for syndromic diagnosis of multiple pathogens using multiplex PCR methodology for the diagnosis of upper and lower respiratory tract infections, joints, meningitis/encephalitis, gastroenteritis as well as identification of pathogens from blood cultures with parallel detection of antimicrobial resistance genes.
  • Molecular analyzers [RT-PCR] for the detection of HPV, influenza viruses A/B, RSV, Clostridium difficile, resistance genes of multidrug-resistant bacteria for the immediate detection of carriers of multidrug-resistant microbes and a special analyzer for the molecular detection of SARS CoV2 in just 20 minutes for the management of emergencies.
  • Special reagent inventory management software with RFID system
  • Electronic 24-hour recording of refrigerator and ambient temperatures in order to seamlessly monitor the reagents as well as their storage conditions from their introduction into the laboratory until their final consumption, ensuring full traceability and ideal storage conditions
  •  Information system which ensures the best possible management and archiving of results based on current legislation.

The laboratory is staffed with experienced and well-trained:

  • Physician-Biopathologists with many years of clinical experience and specially trained in the evaluation of pediatric samples
  • Biologists
  • Technologists
  • Administrative staff

All staff follow a continuing education program

The laboratory

  • Performs all checks related to maintaining a safe hospital environment.
  • Participates in the epidemiological investigation of infections and the daily monitoring of colonizations/infections by resistant microorganisms in patients, following the instructions and protocols of the National Public Health Organization.

The perfect technological infrastructure of the Biopathological The Laboratory of the Athens Medical Center, combined with its staffing with experienced and highly qualified personnel, and the implementation of multiple internal and external quality controls, rank it among the most modern Laboratories both in Greece and abroad.
